Constitution Memorial Day

Kenpo Kinenbi is celebrated in Japan on 3 May each year. It is a national holiday and a part of the Golden Week in Japan.

Japan adopted a new constitution, after the end of WW II, on May 3, 1947. Constitution Memorial Day is an occasion for the Japanese people to reflect on the laws of the land.

It also happens to be the only day in the year when the Japanese Parliament - National Diet Building/Kokkai-Gijido - is open to the general public.

Postwar Constitution of Japan

Notable features of the Postwar/Peace Constitution of Japan are :

* Renunciation of the right to wage war contained in Article 9 of the Prewar Constitution.

* Provision for de jure popular sovereignty in conjunction with the monarchy.

* The constitution was drawn up under the Allied occupation, after WW II ended. The main aim of this constitution was to replace Japan's previous militaristic and absolute monarchy system with a form of liberal democracy.

* Currently, it is a rigid document and no subsequent amendment has been made to it since its adoption.
